EXPEDITIONS
Our combined
camping and lodge expeditions offer a longer period to really experience
the wonders of the rainforest.
Apart from those offered below, we
can also arrange tailor made expeditions if clients are interested in
shorter or longer trips or
if there is a special interest
involved such
as
bird watching or
photography.
Tambopata
Expedition
- 5 Days/4 Nights
Day
1
After meeting
you at the airport we travel to the port on the banks of the river
Tambopata. There is an optional stop at the market to see local
produce and medicinal products from the rainforest. The first days
river trip will take us deep into the Tambopata Reserve Zone. We
travel by motorised dugout canoe heading upstream for approximately
5½ hours (picnic
lunch onboard) stopping en route if we see any interesting birds or
animals. The first night is spent in a small lodge with beautiful
views up and down the river. There is an optional trip to a nearby
waterfall where you can swim and fish. In the evening we can go
looking for caiman (small alligators) with spotlights along the
banks of the river.
Day
2
After breakfast and a morning walk to look at the huge diversity of
plants, birds and possibly animals that live in the rainforest, we
continue upriver passing into the Bajuaja-Sonnene National Park. The
second night is spent camping near "El Chuncho", a small macaw and
parrot collpa and, after setting up camp, time permitting, we can go
for an afternoon walk.
Day
3
We get up early to see the macaws and parrots feeding on the clay
lick and to take a walk in the forest surrounding the collpa. After
breakfast we pack up camp and continue another 3 hours upstream to
our final destination the main clay lick. We camp on a small island
with views of the clay lick and the foothills of the Andes in the
distance. Optional afternoon walk/swimming.
Day
4
A pre dawn start to see the macaw spectacular. Up to 5 species of
macaw and 6 or more species of parrot can be seen feeding on the
lick or sitting in the nearby trees making an incredible noise.
After a late breakfast we can go for a short or long walk depending
on the groups energy levels!
The afternoon can be
spent relaxing or swimming.
Day
5
Another chance to see the macaws in action. After breakfast we break
camp and start the trip back to Puerto Maldonado. There is an
optional stop at an oxbow lake known as "Tres Chimbadas" on the way
downstream. At the lake there is a chance of seeing the shy Giant
River Otter as well as many species of birds found only near water
such as the strange looking Hoatzin. We will arrive back in town
late afternoon and the final night is spent in a hotel.
Dinner can either be at a restaurant serving local food or at the
local pizzeria!
Day
6
Flights generally leave Puerto Maldonado first thing in the morning.
Activities on Day 6 will therefore depend on flight times but it is
usually an early breakfast and then the short journey to the
airport.

Backpacker Expedition to Piedras
- 6 Days/5 Nights
This expedition is for
travellers looking for a genuine rainforest experience but at a cheaper
price. It is cheaper since
a peke-peke motor is used rather than
an outboard motor thereby
increasing the journey time but not effecting the quality service.
Day
1
We will meet you at the airport
and take you to Puerto Arturo, a port at the mouth of the River Piedras, a
40 minute car drive away. The rest of the first day will be spent
travelling up the River Piedras by boat, looking for birds and animals along the
banks of the river and seeing how the local people live. We will
stop just before dusk to set up camp on a beach or on one of the farms
next to the river.
Day
2
The journey begins again after breakfast. Before arriving
at
the research station we will make a stop at an ox-bow lake to spend time
exploring the lake and its surroundings. There may
be a chance to see
the strange looking hoatzin bird or the Horned Screamer or,
if we really lucky,
the family of Giant River Otters may
be out fishing.
Our arrival time to the Research Station will vary depending on the time
we left Puerto Arturo and the height of the river. On average the
journey upstream takes 1½ days. After settling into the Station
there may
be time for an
afternoon walk or,
after a late arrival,
a night walk.
Day
3
After an early breakfast we can
go and explore the rainforest surrounding the station and if we`re lucky, spot some of the 9 species of monkey or other mammals that inhabit the area.
In the afternoon
there is time for a swing in one of the hammocks until the midday heat
cools. Then there is the opportunity to walk to our nearby farm.
At the farm it is possible to see some of the many fruits and vegetables
that grow in the tropical climate. It
is also a great place for spotting birds that are so difficult to see
inside the forest. After dinner, small
groups have the option to spend the night at the
mammal collpa, where it
is possible to spot tapir,
deer or other nocturnal mammals entering to feed on the clay minerals in
the soil.
Day
4
In the morning we can go to the
macaw collpa to see the spectacular macaws and parrots that visit the clay
lick Up to 2 species of large macaw and 8 species of parrot have been
seen at the lick. The afternoon is free to relax around the Station
or to take another walk in the forest. After dinner we can take out
the boat to look for caiman along the river banks or go for a night walk.
Day
5
After breakfast the
we begin the
journey back to Puerto Maldonado, typically arriving late afternoon to town
in time to check into the hotel and explore the town.
Day
6
You may get a chance
for a lie in depending on flight times! Then it`s off to the airport
and farewell to the rainforest.
