 TOUR PACKAGES & EXPEDITIONS

There is the option to visit the Piedras Biodiversity Station on a short stay as part of a tour package.  For visitors with little time to spare we recommend a minimum of 3 nights, any less would mean a rushed tour and not such a fullfilling experience.

Please note that although priority will always be given to researchers but that short term guests are most welcome as education through ecotourism plays an important part in helping to conserve the rainforest.

 The following tours are available:
4 DAYS/3 NIGHTS
BIRDWATCHER PROGRAM
EXTRA NIGHT

We also offer lodge and camping Expeditions to the River Tambopata and a Backpacker Expedition to Piedras.

TOURS

 4 Days/3 Nights

  Day 1

You will be picked up from the airport and taken to either Arturo Port (a 40 minute car journey from the airport to the mouth of the River Piedras) or to Collpayo port on the bank of the River Piedras (1½ hours by car).  The departure point depends upon flight arrival times to Puerto Maldonado; visitors arriving on flights later in the day are more likely to depart from Collpayo.

Once aboard the motorised canoe the journey to our remote research station really begins.  During the first part of the 5½ hr trip we pass scattered farms and have the opportunity to see the way of life of the local people.  Further upstream the farms end and we travel through virgin rainforest marvelling at the lush vegetation whilst looking for Caimans basking in the sun or spotting some of the many birds that inhabit the water edges.

We will arrive to the Station around dusk in time to settle in before dinner.  Later in the evening there is an option to go caiman spotting and star gazing on the river.

Day 2

An early morning start is needed to have the best opportuntiy to see wildlife.  We will choose one of the many trails around the Station to look for some of the many animals and birds that inhabit the forest.

After lunch there is time for a swing in one of the hammocks until the midday heat cools.  Then there is the opportunity to walk to our nearby farm.   At the farm it is possible to see some of the many fruits and vegetables that grow in the tropical climate. It is also a great place for spotting birds that are so difficult to see inside the forest.

In the evening there is the option to go for a night walk to look and listen for unusual night animals and birds of the tropical rainforest.

 Day 3

We will get up early to have the best chance of seeing parrots and macaws feeding at the clay lick.  Up to 2 species of large macaw and 8 species of parrot can be seen gathering in the trees around the lick wall.  The chance of seeing the birds feeding will depend on weather conditions and if any boats happen to be passing.

Late morning we begin our journey back to Puerto Maldonado.  We will stop en route at an ox bow lake to see some of the amazing flora and fauna that live in and around lake ecosystems.  We may see the strange Hoatzin bird or the Horned Screamer or, if we are really lucky, a family of Giant River Otters maybe fishing out on the lake.

We will arrive back into town early evening to check into the hotel.  After time to scrub away the insect repellent we will go out for a traditional meal and depending on energy levels, try a bit of salsa or samba at the local nightclubs!

Day 4

Depending on the flight schedules there may be time to visit the local market or go souvenir shopping before catching the flight to Cuzco or Lima.

Birdwatcher Program (5 days/4 Nights)

Day 1 and Day 2

The same program will be followed as for the first 2 days of 4 Days/3 Nights.

Day 3

These days are free to be spent quietly walking in the forest spotting some of the 628 species of birds that inhabit this rainforest. The open areas around the lodge and the farm are both excellent places for getting good views of birds that are often hard to spot inside the forest.

Day 4

The morning is free to walk in the forest or visit the macaw colpa a final time.

Late morning we begin our journey back to Puerto Maldonado.  We will stop en route at an ox bow lake to see some of the amazing flora and fauna that live in and around lake ecosystems.  We may see the strange Hoatzin bird or the Horned Screamer or if we are really lucky, a family of Giant River Otters maybe fishing out on the lake.

We will arrive back into town early evening to check into the hotel.  After time to scrub away the insect repellent we will go out for a traditional meal and depending on energy levels, try a bit of salsa or samba at the local nightclubs.

Day 5

Depending on the flight schedules there maybe time to visit the local market or go souvenir shopping before catching the flight to Cuzco or Lima.

Extra Night

Any number of extra nights can be added to any of the programs, depending on the time you have available. These days maybe guided or unguided depending on your interests and preference. You will be free to walk the trails, visit the farm or one of the collpas or just relax!

EXPEDITIONS

Our combined camping and lodge expeditions offer a longer period to really experience the wonders of the rainforest.

Apart from those offered below, we can also arrange tailor made expeditions if clients are interested in shorter or longer trips or if there is a special interest involved such as bird watching or photography.

Tambopata Expedition - 5 Days/4 Nights

Day 1

After meeting you at the airport we travel to the port on the banks of the river Tambopata. There is an optional stop at the market to see local produce and medicinal products from the rainforest. The first days river trip will take us deep into the Tambopata Reserve Zone. We travel by motorised dugout canoe heading upstream for approximately 5½ hours (picnic lunch onboard) stopping en route if we see any interesting birds or animals. The first night is spent in a small lodge with beautiful views up and down the river. There is an optional trip to a nearby waterfall where you can swim and fish. In the evening we can go looking for caiman (small alligators) with spotlights along the banks of the river.

Day 2

After breakfast and a morning walk to look at the huge diversity of plants, birds and possibly animals that live in the rainforest, we continue upriver passing into the Bajuaja-Sonnene National Park. The second night is spent camping near "El Chuncho", a small macaw and parrot collpa and, after setting up camp, time permitting, we can go for an afternoon walk.

Day 3

We get up early to see the macaws and parrots feeding on the clay lick and to take a walk in the forest surrounding the collpa. After breakfast we pack up camp and continue another 3 hours upstream to our final destination the main clay lick. We camp on a small island with views of the clay lick and the foothills of the Andes in the distance. Optional afternoon walk/swimming.

Day 4

A pre dawn start to see the macaw spectacular. Up to 5 species of macaw and 6 or more species of parrot can be seen feeding on the lick or sitting in the nearby trees making an incredible noise. After a late breakfast we can go for a short or long walk depending on the groups energy levels! The afternoon can be spent relaxing or swimming.

Day 5

Another chance to see the macaws in action. After breakfast we break camp and start the trip back to Puerto Maldonado. There is an optional stop at an oxbow lake known as "Tres Chimbadas" on the way downstream. At the lake there is a chance of seeing the shy Giant River Otter as well as many species of birds found only near water such as the strange looking Hoatzin. We will arrive back in town late afternoon and the final night is spent in a hotel. Dinner can either be at a restaurant serving local food or at the local pizzeria!

Day 6

Flights generally leave Puerto Maldonado first thing in the morning. Activities on Day 6 will therefore depend on flight times but it is usually an early breakfast and then the short journey to the airport.

Backpacker Expedition to Piedras - 6 Days/5 Nights

This expedition is for travellers looking for a genuine rainforest experience but at a cheaper price. It is cheaper since a peke-peke motor is used rather than an outboard motor thereby increasing the journey time but not effecting the quality service.

Day 1

We will meet you at the airport and take you to Puerto Arturo, a port at the mouth of the River Piedras, a 40 minute car drive away.  The rest of the first day will be spent travelling up the River Piedras by boat, looking for birds and animals along the banks of the river and seeing how the local people live.  We will stop just before dusk to set up camp on a beach or on one of the farms next to the river.

Day 2

The journey begins again after breakfast.  Before arriving at the research station we will make a stop at an ox-bow lake to spend time exploring the lake and its surroundings.  There may be a chance to see the strange looking hoatzin bird or the Horned Screamer or, if we really lucky, the family of Giant River Otters may be out fishing.  Our arrival time to the Research Station will vary depending on the time we left Puerto Arturo and the height of the river.  On average the journey upstream takes 1½ days.  After settling into the Station there may be time for an afternoon walk or, after a late arrival, a night walk.

Day 3

After an early breakfast we can go and explore the rainforest surrounding the station and if we`re lucky, spot some of the 9 species of monkey or other mammals that inhabit the area.   In the afternoon there is time for a swing in one of the hammocks until the midday heat cools.  Then there is the opportunity to walk to our nearby farm.   At the farm it is possible to see some of the many fruits and vegetables that grow in the tropical climate. It is also a great place for spotting birds that are so difficult to see inside the forest.  After dinner, small groups have the option to spend the night at the mammal collpa, where it is possible to spot tapir, deer or other nocturnal mammals entering to feed on the clay minerals in the soil.

Day 4

In the morning we can go to the macaw collpa to see the spectacular macaws and parrots that visit the clay lick  Up to 2 species of large macaw and 8 species of parrot have been seen at the lick.  The afternoon is free to relax around the Station or to take another walk in the forest.  After dinner we can take out the boat to look for caiman along the river banks or go for a night walk.

Day 5

After breakfast the we begin the journey back to Puerto Maldonado, typically arriving late afternoon to town in time to check into the hotel and explore the town.

Day 6

You may get a chance for a lie in depending on flight times!  Then it`s off to the airport and farewell to the rainforest.
