RESEARCH

The River Piedras represents an exciting new area for the study of tropical biology.  Piedras Biodiversity Station provides an ideal base for both long-term MSc and PhD studies or short term expeditions, undergraduate or amateur research projects.

If you are thinking about beginning a project in the area the first step would be to contact us to check the studys feasability.  We can look to see if the study species is present in the area and if it is rare or abundant.

If your project involves sample collection you will need to obtain a permit for collection.  You should contact the Agricultural Ministry at least 2 months before you intend to begin the project in order to have enough time to process the application form.   We can advise you on your permit application and help with translations if necessary.

We can also help with local contacts, for example if you need field assistants with a particular skill or background.

Potential sources of funding for Neotropical research studies can be found at www.wildlife.wisc.edu/simbiota/s-list.htm

Previous research projects (also see reports page)

2004 July, October, November. Fauna Forever.  Research into Birds, Mammals and herptofauna.  Web Site: www.faunaforever.com

2003 June-July.  Biosphere Expeditions.  Continued investigations into the impact of boat traffic on bird behaviour at the macaw clay lick and long term population monitioring of mammals at hunted and non hunted sites. Web Site: www.biosphere-expeditions.org

2002 July-September.  Project Piedras.  Investigated the impact of selective logging on mammal populations at different sites along the River Piedras.                                           Web Site: www.savemonkeys.org

2002 May-June.  Biosphere Expeditions.  Investigated Avian and Mammalian Geophagy and produced the first species list of medium to large mammals for the River Piedras area.

Costs

The daily rate for researchers is $18 per person, this includes food, lodging and use of the trail system.  If you will be staying at the Station for more than 1 month this price includes the cost of river transport to the Station at the beginning of your stay and the return to Puerto Maldonado at the end of your stay.  If you are staying less than 1 month the the river transport costs will be $75 per return trip Puerto-Station-Puerto.

Please Note: The prices of river transport quoted are based on a canoe with Peke-Peke motor.  With this type of motor the journey to the Station takes 1½ days and so you will need a tent and sleeping bag to camp for one night enroute.  Please let us know if you do not have a tent or sleeping bag.  It is possible to arrive to the Station in 1 day using a 65hp outboard motor but the costs of boat hire & gasoline are much higher - $420 for the return trip.
